Interested in becoming a Mentor?
Ementoring is a flexible way to volunteer and an opportunity for you to help develop new skills. By sharing your experiences, you can support other people to grow in confidence and explore options for their future. All you need to be a mentor is a willingness to help other people and an online connection. Because ementoring is done online, you can do it at a time and place that suits you.
STEM Ambassadors
Stem Ambassadors are people just like you, people who wish to promote the STEM subjects with learners. They don’t all do “public speaking”, or work in classrooms nor are they internationally famous, although some are. There are a great number of ways in which STEM Ambassadors can support schools and learners, for example by:
- providing 1:1 mentoring to a student who needs support to work through a challenging aspect of study,
- providing e-mentor careers support,
- giving ‘day-in-the-life’ talks,
- explaining research techniques,
- judging competitions,
- taking part in a science fair,
- advising on CV writing,
- providing support at a careers event
- interview techniques or work skills,
- supporting after school STEM clubs
- providing teachers with up-to-date information about the latest techniques.
- supporting national challenges
- writing a blog that provides insight into your role.
- Giving a workshop to pupils
STEM Ambassadors provide an opportunity for learners to see that stereotypes are just that!
Why become a STEM Ambassador?
There are many schemes that encourage volunteers to support and visit schools; they have a range of names, “facilitators”, “supporters”, etc. However, STEM is a national scheme for schools and colleges. All Ambassadors receive training, have a CRB disclosure, are insured, and become part of the more than 19,000 Ambassadors representing more than 1500 different employers.
Being a STEM Ambassador does not stop you doing what you might already be doing in supporting schools, but it does provide you with (insurance and) a quality mark that is recognised nationally.
As a national STEM Ambassador you will be linked to STEM in a way that being a local ambassador or facilitator cannot but, more importantly, as part of this national scheme your work is celebrated across the country, and the work you undertake in schools and the community is shared.
The first National STEM Ambassador celebrations took place in April 2009 at the House of Lords. Awards for contributions to STEM were made to a number of active Ambassadors across the country. Next year it would be wonderful to celebrate the work of our local STEM Ambassadors.
Why bother?
- It will make a difference to students’ learning by improving motivation, attitudes and enthusiasm and so impacting positively on teaching and learning in lessons;
- It could enhance the school’s curriculum design and/or delivery methods;
- It will improve teachers’ understanding of STEM subjects and the benefits of engaging with a STEM activity;
- It will help schools, teachers and learners access resources from industry that will make a difference in the classroom.
